Here's what you can expect as the Senior Accountant - Accounting Policy 

You are responsible for the monitoring all new accounting guidance and researching, identifying and communicating potential impacts and participating in any required implementation. The primary responsibility will be focused on the accounting policy; however, the position will also be involved with a variety of financial reporting functions and special projects and initiatives as needed.

  1. Accountable for monitoring all changes in GAAP and statutory accounting principles and maintaining a complete library of accounting policy for the Sammons Financial Group (SFG) member companies. Accountable for identifying applicability, communicating applicable findings of accounting research and participating in implementations.
  2. Accountable to work with external auditors and internal stakeholders with regard to accounting policy.
  3. Apply extensive knowledge in Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in order to research and resolve various accounting and reporting questions applicable to both accounting bases.  
  4. Participate in the preparation of the annual Statutory and GAAP audited statements and the related footnotes.
  5. Work directly with the parent company financial reporting staff to ensure consistency between SFG member companies and parent company reporting standards.
  6. Coordinate with and support the external auditors in certain aspects of the annual audits.
  7. Coordinate with and support the regulatory agencies in the five-year financial examinations of the insurance entities.
  8. Possess an extensive understanding of the general ledger and financial reporting systems including account query and drill-through functions.
  9. Develop proficiency in maintaining the existing reports as well as develop ability to write ad hoc financial reports within the reporting system.   
  10. Coach, mentor, and motivate the activities of the Staff Accountant and Accountant II positions.
  11. Develop a strong familiarity of the various Policy Administration systems and Investment Accounting systems
  12. Utilize working knowledge of the FREEDOM system for annual statement preparation and filing.
  13. As stated within the Company Attendance and Punctuality policy, regular attendance is required and expected in order to meet the business service levels and workflow demands.
  14. Provide support/assistance to the management as deemed necessary to complete projects and/or meet deadlines.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial reporting (experience in insurance accounting/reporting considered a plus)
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP accounting principles including consolidation (experience in statutory accounting considered a plus)
  • Posses a thorough knowledge of Excel
  • High degree of analytical ability and judgment
  • Strong good oral and written communication skills
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
  • PC experience including an advanced and extensive proficiency in Excel and Word
  • Frequent contacts with managers and senior officers outside of Corporate Accounting
